Old keys tea table_Tale about a cracked table in an architecture cabinet

You must still remember once last year we called for collecting your old keys? You might also have wondered where these key would have gone? Well, they found their new life in an Old keys tea table.

Last year we designed an Old keys tea table as a community artwork, intending to sell it in an auction and to use the gained money for charity organizations such as Blue Dragon. In that view, all the decoration of the table was made from the old keys we received from all of you.

Each key represents a warm wish for success to Vietnamese children, hoping each of them will get the key they need to open their own bright future.

HOMA architects’ partner in fabrication was Mr Quang Ha – owner of Block84 – a renowned supplier of concrete furniture.  The table had a difficult start when it was casted, because it had not chosen an easy way. So, it actually bears some small cracks at present. But despite all the cracks, it is a very strong table with inner iron reinforcement, and is proud with its embedded keys. Its special design gives it a capacity of being a tea table or transform into a sofa just by rotation. It can absolutely stand hard weather.

Sadly, we could not find an auction to sell the table. Its stayed in our narrow office place for a year and became our chilling corner. It became a beloved member in our small office.

This year we participated in a charity fair and were informed that they actually organized auctions. So, we brought the table there. Several people were interested and curious.

Finally, a couple decided to take the Old keys tea table. They stayed beside the table and made sure that they would raise the bid whenever someone else wanted to take the table. Their determination paid off; they won the auction. We did hope the price would be twice the fabrication cost, however the duration of the bid was too short for the price to raise, so in the end, the price was just a quarter of the fabrication price. But that is not very important. The best part is we enjoyed seeing the table finish its strange journey and complete its duty. We feel happy to see somebody loved the table design, so that we could contribute to the kind spirit of the charity fair.

With plenty of love we thank you who sent us all your old keys, and please proudly share this joy because you know, your old keys are fabulous.
